Matthew Harrison (AKA The Train)
I attended Barnard Castle School (where I earned my nickname whilst playing rugby union) from Year 7 until leaving in July 2010 after my A-levels.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Barney and elected to take a gap year before heading for university. I decided that, even though I was taking a break from studying, I wanted my year out to be productive and the thought of walking the length of the UK appealed. Making the walk a sponsored one was the next logical step (no pun intended!).
I worked part-time at the Tesco store in Bishop Auckland and some of my earnings funded the 1225+ mile walk. In July/August 2011 my family holidayed in the Austrian Tyrol, where we did lots of walking. I also completed the 3 Peaks Challenge on 10th/11th August 2011.
I started my undergraduate studies in Chemical Engineering at Manchester University on 26 Sept 2011, so I'm now in my 2nd year. I've joined the University Hiking Club and I'm enjoying playing for the Chem Eng rugby team.
